Abstract
McGill's new Music Multimedia Room, currently under construction, is a room with few parallels in the world. It is a large room designed specifically for acoustics research but also intended for large ensemble rehearsals and small performances. This lecture describes the acoustical design approaches that Kirkegaard Associates takes to a recital hall, a rehearsal room, and a space for research, discussing examples of each type of room and how these approaches are combined in the design of McGill's MMR.
Biography
Joseph Myers has designed a significant number of the firm’s major projects. This deep experience with performing arts, academic, and worship facilities forms the foundation of his work. An active singer and actor, Joseph also brings a performer’s perspective to his projects. He draws on his background in architectural engineering to develop practical, buildable solutions, working in respectful collaboration with the architect, theatre consultant, and engineers. He particularly enjoys interacting with clients to translate their needs and desires into clear acoustic goals, and to translate those goals into a beautiful, functional, and affordable facility.
Joseph also lectures on acoustic design, presenting to a variety of academic and professional institutions including the Acoustical Society of America and the United States Institute of Theatre Technology.
