BEETHOVEN’S SONATAS OPUS 90 AND 106 (“HAMMERKLAVIER”)

ON A STREICHER FORTEPIANO

IN VIRTUAL ACOUSTICS

Beethoven’s Sonata Opus 106 (“Hammerklavier”) is legendary among pianists for its great difficulty.  Equally legendary is Franz Liszt's performance of the sonata in 1836.  In the words of Hector Berlioz, a “new young Oedipus” had solved “the riddle of the Sphinx.”

In this concert, Tom Beghin takes up the challenge, performing the Hammerklavier on a replica of a six-and-half-octave fortepiano by Nannette Streicher.  (The same Ms. Streicher had, back in 1819, just after the sonata’s publication, tried her hand at it, but “after three months of practicing” she still did not get beyond the first movement.)  The instrument's ambitiously rich yet transparent colors are on par with Beethoven’s flamboyant ideas, and will help to dispel that other legend, that Beethoven wrote for the “piano of the future."  The beautiful Sonata Opus 90, small in scale but large in invention, will be a worthy counterpart to the giant Opus 106.

Another collaboration with Prof. Wieslaw Woszczyk, this will be Prof. Beghin’s third live@CIRMMT performance in live virtual acoustics.
