March 18th, 2009 - Understanding mouthpieces through science and practice. A workshop around single-reed instruments.

  • Scientists and instrumentalists are invited to discuss the physical phenomena happening in the mouthpiece assembly of single-reed woodwinds. 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., followed by a reception, A832, Schulich School of Music.

Axis 5Music perception and cognition

April 9th, 2009 - Music Perception and Cognition Student Colloquium series 

  • A new Music Perception and Cognition student colloquium series has been initiated this February. These meetings constitute a unique opportunity for students from various research fields such as neurosciences, psychology, music theory and musicology to interact and present their research on music perception and cognition. The next meeting will be held on Thursday, April 9th from 4:30 - 6:30 pm at the Schulich School of Music (room TBA). Stay tuned!

  • Niels Lund (University of Tromsø, Norway) has been working at CIRMMT this month on the World Opera project (http://www.theworldopera.org) with the research team of Jeremy Cooperstock.  He gave a talk entitled "The World Opera: An introduction and some preliminary results", 10am-12pm, in room C-201, Strathcona Music Building, Schulich School of Music.

  • Erika Donald presented 'Balance & Bowing: Investigating the effects of tempo on bow arm and torso movements in expert cello playing' on March 14th.
  • Erika Donald and Xenia Pestova presented 'The Digital Orchestra Project: Digital musical instruments and performance practice' on March 15th.

 

February 27th, 2009 - Workshop on Music and Pain

  • BRAMS, CIRMMT and the Faculté de Musique of the Université de Montréal hosted a workshop on Music and Pain at the Université de Montréal. The invited speakers were Eckart Altenmüller, Marion Good, and Deborah Salmon. The current state of research in Music Therapy and Neuropsychology was discussed, as well as the link between these disciplines.

 

February 17 - 22, 2009 - SPARK Festival of Electronic Music & Arts

  • Erika Donald and Xenia Pestova presented 'The Digital Orchestra Project: Digital musical instruments and performance practice' in Minneapolis on February 20th.
  • Xenia Pestova performed 'Song from the Moment' by McGill graduate Bryan Jacobs in Minneapolis on February 21st.

February 27-28, 2009 - Guthman Musical Instrument Competition

  • Andrew Stewart and Joe Malloch participated in the competition with the t-stick-sonor-j, which takes place at Georgia Tech Center for Music Technology. Andrew Stewart will perform his piece "Everybody to the Power of One".
