ABSTRACT

FR

Creating dynamic sculptures with fluid materials and digital intermedia composition instruments

The artists Aurélie and Pia Baltazar (aka The Baltazars duo) will present their artistic creation and research process. This process is centred on the control of fluid materials (sound, light, wind, smoke, mist, fabrics…) through digital intermedia composition instruments.

After a presentation of some of their main works, they will explain in further details the different steps and components of their research-creation processes : conception, prototyping, interaction design, sensory experimentation, scripting/composition. They will outline the main aesthetic principles and methodologies involved in those processes, by questioning which scripting/composition modalities of such fluid materials are able to make sensory narrations emerge, and which conditions of reception can enhance the experience of those narrations for the audience. They will finally present their oncoming research tracks, and will discuss them with the participants. The seminar follows the Intermedia Mapping and Scripting Workshop, that was held at CIRMMT on December 13th, 2019.

The Baltazars are a duo of interdisciplinary artists creating sensory experiences. Their works are intersensory sculptures of fluid materials, that range between performances, installations - sometimes site-specific - and objects. For this, they create various devices allowing to foster voluminosity and materiality to such fluid materials as light, sound, mist, fabric… by developing dedicated digital instruments–in collaboration with various engineers and research teams–that allow them to sculpt the materials movements and behaviours in time. In doing in so, they endeavour to create evanescent shapes continuously forming and transforming, sensory landscapes, experiences of suggestion and fragility.
