Hugues Genevois: "From mechanical instrument to virtual instrument : gestual control for sound synthesis"

Hugues Genevois is a research scientist at the Laboratoire d'Acoustique Musicale - LAM (Université Pierre et Marie Curie - CNRS - Ministère de la culture).

ABSTRACT:
In this presentation, after a brief description of the LAM, the topic will be to introduce some new research axis growing in the laboratory, mainly about gestual control of non-linear synthesis models and sound radiation.
A vast majority of musical instruments are built, or tuned, in order to obtain non-linear behaviour, functions of the way they are played. These features are very important for expressiveness and identification. But, in fact, sound synthesis is not only signal synthesis. The way signals are transduced into sounds is very important for the « truthfulness » or the materiality of sounds. So, our last researches tends to control the entire chain from musical gestures to sound radiation.
