Yann Pasco: Research background and projects: Acoustics and vibrations, signal processing applied to technologies and music

ABSTRACT:

The presentation will try to demonstrate how acoustic and vibration studies in an industrial context are quite related to acoustics and vibrations in musical or sound rendering applications. After introducing his educational background, Yann Pasco will present industrial applications useful for both musical and industrial fields. In particular, he will discuss how active control of vibration is useful for acoustic comfort in transport applications and how source localization and laser vibrometry for damage detection in structures can be applied to source localization in musical instruments.

ABOUT YANN PASCO:

Yann Pasco is a mechanical Engineer and also a classical guitarist. Always interested by Acoustics, he was the president of the student’s association for speaker building during his bachelor’s studies in France. During this period he worked as a trainee at “Audax industries” where he realized that having a musical background is not incompatible with Engineering. He also worked as a casual worker in the audio industry during his master’s degree at IRCAM (Paris) where he did sound capture, sound system installation and analog studio wiring for visual and audio artists. He acquired a specialization in using linear microphone arrays for sound capture in reverberant rooms. Since 2002, after his PhD in acoustics and vibrations, he has been working on acoustic comfort and integration of transducers in industrial structures as well as signal processing and algorithm programming for active control applications. He is, as an example, working on spatialization and sound rendering of acoustic fields in an airplane cabin, acoustic comfort in helicopters, active control of sound and vibrations, and large microphone array designs and fabrications for acoustic field measurement using holography and beam forming.
