Peter Plessas: Playing live-electronics: A performer's perspective on composed music transformations

ABSTRACT:

The different meanings of "Live-Electronics" depend on the musical genre, tradition and geographic location. It is often found in "mixed music" / "musique sur support" / "Live-Elektronik". A guideline of the combination of acoustic musical instruments with electronic sound generation and transformation alike, is the aim of this talk.  The focus will initially be on the role of the performer, either acoustic or electronic, attempting an interpretation of a composed work of music. Examples and strategies, given from the associated performance practice, are offered as inspiration for composers, allowing them to improve their skills in creating and notating so-called "composed music transformations". A special notion will be made of the "Live-Electronic Musician"(LEM), with her/his unusual job description being a musician and instrument builder alike. In discussing the education and qualifications of today's contemporary music performers, a common ground leading to the identification and acceptance of Live-Electronic Musicians is proposed.
