Description

During this 3 hour session, participants will get the chance to understand the science of the Opera by being presented with research into our neurological relationship to sound, which will then be interpreted by performers from the Montreal Opera and pieces taken from the current production of Faust. Dr Robert Zatorre (Montreal Neurological Institute) will provide an introduction to the brain and the circuits most relevant for music, the nature of specialization of the musician's brain and necessary brain circuits for musical emotion. Dr Boris Kleber (University of Tübingen, Germany) will present on the basics of song physiology and vocal control as well as the nature of the singer's brain and what makes it special. Dr Isabelle Peretz (Université de Montréal) discusses her own research on tone-deafness or amusia, what happens when the brain is out of tune and why some people simply just can’t sing.
