Abstract:

CIRMMT student members Xenia Pestova (D.Mus candidate) and Erika Donald (Ph.D student) will present 'The Digital Orchestra Project: Digital Musical Instruments and Performance Practice', to be delivered at the upcoming SPARK Festival of Electronic Music and Arts. They will discuss the 3-year CIRMMT/McGill Digital Orchestra Project, an interdisciplinary collaboration between researchers in music technology, composition, and performance, which resulted in the creation of several new digital musical instruments (DMIs) and two ensemble works performed in the MusiMars Festival 2008. Emphasis is on the development of performance practice for these instruments, including issues of interface design, playing techniques, gesture-to-sound mapping, notation, sound diffusion and balance, and ensemble rehearsal and performance.
