Workshop on Design of Behavioral Experiments for Non-Psychologists

This workshop is organized by CIRMMT student Bruno L. Giordano. It will take place on May 7th, 2010 at McGill University (A832, New Music Building, 527 Sherbrooke St. West). This workshop is free. Registration is required.

Description

This workshop is meant to introduce CIRMMT students without a background in experimental psychology to the methods of behavioral research.

Preliminary Schedule

The workshop is divided into two sessions. During the morning sessions there will be lectures on:

1) types of research design (e.g. experimental vs. correlational)

2) threats to validity and how to avoid them (e.g. experimenter effects)

3) experimental methods, with a focus on paradigms used in research on perception (e.g. psycho-physics, dissimilarity estimation)

During the morning session, students will also receive pointers to statistical models and software. In the afternoon, there will be a hands-on session. Students will present their research questions and will receive suggestions on how to answer them with a behavioral experiment.

Workshop on Design of Behavioral Experiments for Non-Psychologists

After registering, students are strongly encouraged to send a brief description of their research questions to Bruno L. Giordano at: bruno dot giordano at music dot mcgill dot ca.  Students who would like to hear about specific methodological topics not covered by the abstract should also contact Bruno L. Giordano well ahead of time. In case of limited availability, priority will be given to students with concrete plans for future behavioral studies.
