The Montréal Contemporary Music Lab (MCML) is a 14-day performance and creation workshop exploring, celebrating, and creating bonds between performers, composers, sound artists, improvisers and mixed/multi media artists engaged in the act of creating new music. Formed in 2011 by seven emerging musicians, this lab is a collective run entirely by and for young artists in Montréal.

After a quick overview into techniques used in the field of guided improvised music, a presentation by composer/performer Kevin Gironnay will focus on Ensemble ILÉA’s system of interactive score to guide improvisation. This workshop will elaborate on methods used by ILÉA and feature a short demonstration.

Kevin Gironnay (b. 1989) is a composer and performer living in Montreal. He creates acousmatic and mixed music, produces music for sound installations, videos and dance, and performs improvised music, in solo or collaborations.

His work is focused on taming chaotic elements into musical contents by using conceptual or concrete processes, hence his love for improvisation. He is also dedicated to shaping musical ideas in the micro and macro domains, hence his love for composition.

Kevin Gironnay completed a master’s degree in composition with Nicolas Bernier, and has also been influenced by the teaching of Christine Groult, Horacio Vaggione, Denis Dufour, Jacopo Baboni Schilingi, Lorenzo Bianchi and Giacomo Platini.

His music has been played in Canada, China, United States and throughout Europe.

He is an active member of the collective Unmapped, dedicated to electroacoustic improvised music, since 2012, and he founded in 2016 an improvised mixed music band, Ensemble ILÉA. He also recently joined the electroacoustic quartet QUADr.

Kevin Gironnay is a collaborative member of CIRMMT.
