Workshop on Steven Kazuo Takasugi's 'Sideshow' with NO HAY BANDA

A workshop presented in collaboration with Research Axis 4 (Expanded music practice) and No Hay Banda. Please note that this workshop is in connected to the Distinguished Lecture with Steven Takasugi on February 21st.

Description

Composer Steven Kazuo Takasugi and NO HAY BANDA, with the participation of Charles-Antoine Frechette, present a workshop on Takasugi’s hour-long work Sideshow (2009-2015), for chamber octet, electronic amplification and playback. Based on the dark sideshows of Coney Island’s amusement parks in the early part of the 20th century, Sideshow is a work of music theatre that is framed in a chamber music performance suggesting a circus sideshow (freak show). The work is a meditation on virtuosity, freak shows, entertainment, spectacle, business, and the sacrifices one makes to survive in the world.

NO HAY BANDA will perform the Canadian premiere of Sideshow on February 4, 2019 at La Sala Rossa (details below). Workshop attendees will be able to purchase advance tickets for $8 at the workshop in lieu of $12 at the concert.
