Membership

CIRMMT Membership Categories

Researchers

  • Regular Member (previously Full Members): This category includes senior researchers, such as faculty members from one of the partner universities as well as other institutions and from industry, whose principal research affiliation is with the Centre.  
  • Collaborator (previously Associate and Affiliate Members): This category includes industry partners, adjunct professors, faculty members from partner and non-partner universities who are primarily affiliated with another Centre, visiting researchers and technical and research associates/assistants. Collaborator members are not eligible for CIRMMT funding and cannot sponsor student members.

Students

  • Post-doctoral and Graduate Student Member: This category includes Post-Doctoral and Graduate students working under the supervision of, or sponsored by, a CIRMMT Regular member.  These members are able to apply for funding as long as they fulfill the eligibility criteria noted for each funding opportunity.
  • Undergraduate and Visiting Student Member: This category includes Undergraduate and visiting students working under the supervision of, or sponsored by, a CIRMMT Regular member.  These members are not eligible for funding. 

Other Categories

  • Honorary Lifetime Member:  Honorary lifetime membership is given to CIRMMT Regular Members who have retired from active academic service in recognition of their having made a highly significant contribution to the activities of CIRMMT over the course of their career.
  • Visiting Scholars and Artists: CIRMMT hosts visiting researchers from around the world.  Scholars and artists who are interested in traveling to Montreal to work on a project with one or more CIRMMT members are asked to contact the relevant member(s) directly. How to apply for membership

Regular & Collaborator Membership

  • To apply for Regular membership within CIRMMT, please submit:
  1. 1. A letter of intent
  2. 2. Your full curriculum vitae 
  3. 3. Two letters of support from CIRMMT Regular members to the Centre’s Executive Committee for review. 
  4. Applications will be considered in a two-stage process.  Selected candidates will be required to present their work to the Centre’s research community before a final recommendation is made to the Board. 
  • To apply as a Collaborator within CIRMMT, please submit: 
  1. 1. A letter of intent
  2. 2. Your full curriculum vitae
  3. 3. Two letters of sponsorship from CIRMMT Regular Members to the Centre’s Executive Committee for review. 

      The term for Regular and Collaborator Centre membership is up to three years, renewable.  The ratification of nominations for new Regular and Collaborator Members of the Centre, as well as renewals of membership, is the prerogative of CIRMMT's Board of Directors.

      REGULAR MEMBER RENEWALS: Please note that renewals will be confirmed through the cyclical FRQ-SC funding processes.  If you do not send CIRMMT staff the necessary documents requested at these times, we will assume you no longer wish to be a Regular member.


      Post-Doctoral/Graduate/Undergraduate/Visiting Student Membership

      • To apply for Post-doctoral/Graduate/Undergraduate Student membership: 
      1. 1. Please ask your CIRMMT supervisor or sponsor to submit your name, email address and academic details (department, academic program, year of study) via the online Student Management system. 
      2. 2. Once step 1 is complete, students will receive an email requesting them to submit a short written explanation as to why they want to be part of CIRMMT and how their research connects to the Centre. This will be reviewed by the Director(s).

      N.B.: Students seeking membership must be enrolled at a university which our Regular members are involved with and must be working on a research project that is within the mandate of the Centre. Only Regular members can sponsor students.

      • To apply as a Visiting Student: 
      1. 1. You will need to follow the procedure regarding Research Traineeships at McGill:  https://www.mcgill.ca/students/international/incoming/research
      2. 2. Once step 1 is complete, please ask your CIRMMT supervisor or sponsor to submit your name, email address and academic details (department, academic program, year of study) via the online Student Management system. Please note that only Regular members can sponsor students.
      3. 3. Once step 2 is complete, students will receive an email requesting them to submit a short written explanation as to why they want to be part of CIRMMT and how their research connects to the Centre. This will be reviewed by the Director(s).
      The term for Post-doctoral/Graduate/Undergraduate/Visiting Student membership is up to two years, renewable.
