CIRMMT Student Representative

CIRMMT's student representative is elected by the student membership and serves on our Board of Directors.  The student representative is responsible for chairing the Student Executive Committee (composed of the 12 axis student coordinators), and for developing new student-initiated activities within the Centre. The student representative consults with students on a regular basis to ensure that their concerns are brought to the Board.

Charalampos Saitis holds an MA from the Sonic Arts Research Center in Belfast, a Postgraduate Diploma in Music and Media Technology from Trinity College Dublin, and a BSc in Mathematics from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He is presently a PhD student in Music Technology at McGill University, working with Professor Gary Scavone in the Computational Acoustic Modeling Laboratory. His research interests include musical acoustics, perceptual aspects of violin quality, acoustic analyses, measurements and modeling of string instruments, and physical modelling and sound synthesis.

Personal statement

I am currently completing my second year in the music technology doctoral program. While a student, I have been actively involved in different aspects of student representation at both Faculty and University level. Since November 2009 I have been a regular member of the CIRMMT Student Executive as a Student Coordinator for Research Axis I, successfully representing student members of the axis as well as organizing research workshops. It was through this experience that I decided to run for CIRMMT Student Representative. Over the past year I worked closely with the out- going Student Representative and gained important insight into the roles and responsibilities of the position. Moreover, I became acquainted with current projects and issues of the centre that need to be addressed.

Continuing the important work of the previous Student Representatives, my priorities would be to work together with the CIRMMT administration and the CIRMMT Student Executive to:

  • Encourage student participation and volunteering at the centre’s activities,
  • Amplify student collaboration across axes and between universities and institutions, and
  • Evaluate the role of the Student Executive.

Axis Student Coordinators

The axis student coordinators are selected on a yearly basis by the co-leaders of our six research axes.  They are responsible for fostering interdisciplinary research developments amongst the student membership by promoting student research interests within each axis and by consulting with other axis student coordinators.  They represent their axis on the CIRMMT Student Executive Committee and assist with coordination of workshops and axis meetings.
