2017-18 Student Representative and Axis Student Coordinators

CIRMMT Student Representative

CIRMMT's student representative is elected by the student membership and serves on our Board of Directors.  The student representative is responsible for chairing the Student Executive Committee (composed of up to eight axis student coordinators), and for developing new student-initiated activities within the Centre. The student representative consults with students on a regular basis to ensure that their concerns are brought to the Board.

Rachel Bou Serhal

Background

Rachel is a passionate teacher, an inquisitive researcher, an adventurous cyclist and an ardent music lover. She completed her B.S in Electrical Engineering at Michigan State University, where she was heavily involved with Audio Enthusiasts and Engineers, a student group that promotes project based learning environments and holds weekly educational forums on all things related to audio. She finished her Master’s in Electrical Engineering in December 2011  at MSU focusing on nonlinear control systems. She moved to Montreal in the beginning of 2012 to follow her research interests and experience the beautiful culture the city has to offer. In June 2016, she completed her PhD at École de technologie supérieure (ÉTS). During her PhD she developed a low-complexity in-ear speech enhancement algorithm and modeled the vocal effort of talkers wearing hearing protection devices. She spent 7 months in Copenhagen at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) working on the vocal effort modeling part of her project as a visiting PhD under the Erasmus Mundus Auditory Cognitive Network Grant. She is now on a postdoctoral fellowship under the Mitacs elevate program. Her project envisions a Radio Acoustical Virtual Environment where speech is captured from inside the ear, denoised and enhanced to be transmitted only to a specific radius of listeners. This distance will be a function of the speaker's vocal effort and background noise level. Her research interests are hearing protection, speech signal processing, speech perception, nonlinear control, and engineering education. 

Personal statement

A passion for sound and a dedication to problem solving brought me to CIRMMT. Over the past four years of being a CIRMMT member, I have gradually gotten more implicated and involved. As an electrical engineer, it took me a while to find my niche but now I feel challenged, welcomed and ready to make an impact.

Serving as student delegate for the National Hearing Conservation Association, gave me the tools I need to properly represent and echo the needs of the student members. CIRMMT’s student members are the core of its success and the future of its development. As CIRMMT’s student representative, I will hold meetings with the student coordinators as well as all student members to make sure that students’ concerns are vocalized to CIRMMT’s decision board and their needs met. I would also like to get better acquainted with all the members to build a stronger relationship with the École de technologie supérieure to harbour collaboration and strengthen the interdisciplinary aspect of CIRMMT. 

 

Axis Student Coordinators

The axis student coordinators are selected on a yearly basis by the co-leaders of our four research axes.  They are responsible for fostering interdisciplinary research developments amongst the student membership by promoting student research interests within each axis and by consulting with other axis student coordinators.  They represent their axis on the CIRMMT Student Executive Committee and assist with coordination of workshops and axis meetings.
