Research Axis: Music Perception and Cognition

Music Perception and Cognition (RA5)

This axis includes work in the psychology and neuroscience of audition. Music perception research explores the processing of timbre, auditory space, absolute and relative pitch, and sound source properties of musical sounds, auditory scene analysis, voice categorization, identification of formal musical functions, processing of temporal structure and generation of expectancies in musical sequences and pieces. A new area is research on the dynamics of emotional response to music using continuous behavioral and psychophysiological response methods in a concert setting. The brain substrates of emotional response and the rewarding effects of music listening are also studied. In interaction with axis 2, perceptual, cognitive and motor aspects of performance use a computer-controlled piano and motion capture system to study musical expression, movement preparation and musical synchronization.
