Electronic controllers for vibrato manipulation

The search for optimal gestural mappings for the control of computer input devices is the subject of research in applied cognitive psychology. Gestural mappings for the control of digital musical instruments have been discussed recently in the field of music technology. We attempted to identify an optimal mapping for vibrato production. Pianists and violinists were tested on three mappings. Modulated applied pressure is the optimal musical mapping for vibrato production.
