Emotional responses and perception of structure in a solo clarinet work by Stravinsky were assessed in three different conditions. Subjects received audio only, visual only, or both audio and visual. The visual channel contains a great deal of the structural and emotional content of the auditory channel. The emotional ratings of the audio-visual (together) condition were greater than the sum of either component, suggesting an emergent property when these two sensory modalities are combined.
