Due to bandwidth limitations, compression must be employed in videoconferencing technologies used for distance education. User experience and performance were quantified under various forms of video degradation. In a cooperative task, a teacher led a student through the construction of either an origami form or a modular building-block model. Although tolerant to degradations, user performance depended on task specifics. General-purpose codecs are likely sub-optimal for many activities.
