Discrimination thresholds for high resolution and compressed audio formats

  Research Project Information
Runtime: Since Jan 01, 2006
Project coordination: Catherine Guastavino; Daniel Levitin

The aim of this study is to compare the quality of three variations of digital music compression with an uncompressed CD-quality file. Two experiments were designed to assess participants' judgments of the quality of the various degrees of compression. The first experiment was intended to establish whether participants can distinguish between the different qualities of the digital audio files (DAF). The second experiment has been designed to explore which DAF people prefer listening to.  The study has been further extended to investigate discrimination between recordings at different sampling rates and using different A/D converters.
