About FORUM 2010

2010 INTERNATIONAL FORUM FOR YOUNG COMPOSERS « MUSIC & VIDEO ART » - November 8 to 26, 2010

Created in 1991 by the NEM and held every two years, the International Forum for Young Composers was designed at first as a creative laboratory in order to share and let people discover, on a single stage, the unique universes of today’s young composers. Up to now, nine FORUM were held: six in Montreal and three abroad; in Australia, Amsterdam and Lyon.

The 10th International Forum for Young Composers, combining for the first time music and video art, will be held in Montreal from November 8 to 26, 2010.

The international jury is formed as follows : Denis Gougeon (Canada, composer), Andrea Liberovici (Italy, composer), John Rea (Canada, composer), Frans Van Rossum (Netherlands, musicologist) and Lorraine Vaillancourt (artistic director of the Nouvel Ensemble Moderne). The jury met in Montreal from December 7 to 11, 2009 in order to choose the eight composers attending the 2010 Forum among 98 applications received from 30 countries:

Raffaele Grimaldi | Italy

Then, the eight composers chose one video art of the four selected by the NEM (video artists : Nathalie Bujold, Chantal duPont, David Manseau, Leighton Pierce). Afterwards they had to compose a new piece for the 15 musicians of the Nouvel Ensemble Moderne. The eight composers will be attending a 3-weeks worshop which will lead them to work directly and daily with the NEM. They will also participate in several activities: public rehearsals, meetings, mini-forum, roundtables, debates).

The musicians of the NEM, conducted by Lorraine Vaillancourt, will perform the creations of the eight composers during two concerts closing the 2010 FORUM on November 24 and 26, at the salle Claude-Champagne venue. Four prizes will be offered for this occasion : 1st prize : $ 3000, 2nd prize : $ 2000, 3rd prize : $ 1500 and the public prize : $ 1000.
