ABSTRACT
The vinyl resurgence means that you, as a music professional, may have to approve a test pressing of your work. This can be a very exacting process. Bob Ludwig will show you how to do it properly. He will also discuss John Eargle's 'Performance Characteristics of the Commercial Stereo Disc' AES paper, and show a video of the Apollo/Transco Master Lacquer plant and a video tour through the disc making process as conducted at Pallas, one of the world's great vinyl plants.
ABOUT Bob Ludwig
An AES fellow and recipient of the AES Gold Medal, Bob has earned 12 Grammy Awards, including a recent recognition for Best-engineered Classical, and 2 Latin Grammys. Ludwig holds a bachelor of Music in music education and a Master of Music degree in performance (trumpet) and music literature from the Eastman School of Music. He was awarded an Honorary Doctoral degree from the University of Southern Maine. While at Eastman he also worked as an announcer at a commercial classical radio station, worked in the school's recording department, and played Principal Trumpet with the Utica Symphony Orchestra.
Ludwig learned the art of record mastering at A&R Recording with Phil Ramone as his mentor. He moved to Sterling Sound shortly after its incorporation and became Vice-President. At Masterdisk he was VP and Chief Engineer. 25 years ago he opened his own business, Gateway Mastering Studios in Portland, Maine. In 1997 the studio began its DVD Authoring operations and Gateway was the first mastering studio in the world to offer DVD services.
