ABSTRACT:
A brief introduction on the acoustic aspects and design philosophies of recording control rooms will be given. After this introduction, the acoustic design of two listening laboratories in the New Music Building will be discussed.

Room A018, the Ear Training Lab which also doubles as a recording control room, has a classic approach, although the positioning of the windows challenged the suppression of early reflections.

Room A817, the Critical Listening Room, is equipped with an innovative use of diffusers in a phase modulated array to suppress the early reflections. In addition, the absorption in the room can be varied by reversible wall panels. The diffuser array results in maximum freedom in loudspeaker placement and minimizes the influence of variation in the reverberation on tonal quality, timbre and localisation.
