ABSTRACT
A better understanding of the brain can be reached with the use and development of new sensory assistive technologies. These new technologies can also aid us in the design of a new generation of sensory substitution/completion platforms for visual and audio creation.
Professor Rouat will review fundamental characteristics of the brain that he is using in the design of sensory substitution/completion systems. He will then present the NECOTIS and CIRMMT’s research platform for substitution from vision to audition and from audition to vision. The automatic auditory and visual scene analysis problem will be discussed and he will present the neuro-computational signal processing approach he is using for object extraction in images and sounds. Applications in auditory signals and images analysis/recognition will be described. A discussion for potential use in music will conclude the seminar.

Jean Rouat is full professor in the electrical and computer engineering department of université de Sherbrooke, adjunct professor in the department of biological sciences of université de Montréal. He funded the inter-university research group in computational neuroscience and intelligent signal processing (NECOTIS, UdeS & UdeM) and is full member of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Music Media and Technology (CIRMMT), Schulich school of music, McGill Univ.
