Spencer Topel: Scaleable art: Open source hardware for music, sound art and installation

ABSTRACT

In recent years, the Open-Source Hardware (OSH) community has expanded into a billion-dollar industry with legions of followers. The opportunities for integrating hardware/software OS have given rise to a new kind of inventor willing to get their 'hands dirty' with hardware, but also provides opportunities for composers and sound artists to explore previously costly or impractical endeavors, e.g. multi-computer installations, cluster computing for audio/video processing, and 'piece-in-a-box' approaches to electroacoustic and interactive systems. This workshop will focus on examples of artwork by Topel and other composers and sound artists, as well as hands-on techniques for beginners.
