The goal of this workshop is to present and discuss approaches to the analysis of recurring musical structures at different hierarchical levels (from rhythmic and melodic patterns to sections of a piece) in music from several styles and epochs. We will also discuss ways in which these structures are perceived and affect the cognitive processing of music during listening.

Workshop guests include

  • Elizabeth Hellmuth Margulis (University of Arkansas, who gives a CIRMMT Distingished Lecture on this topic the day before)
  • William Caplin (McGill University)
  • RenĂ© Rusch Daley (McGill University)
  • Christoph Neidhöfer (McGill University)
  • Stephen McAdams (McGill University).

The panelists will each briefly present a position on this topic from the perspectives of music theory and music psychology. From that point we will extract 3-4 main issues and dedicate discussion time (ca. 30 minutes) to each one. The focus will be on music theory as a basis for hypothesis development for psychology experiments on musical recurrence.

Registration is on a first-come first-served basis (35-40 seats).  Please fill out the online registration form:
