Description

The presentation will feature what is intellectual property (IP), the different types of IP and what they entail, who is an author Vs an inventor and provide an overview of the McGill Intellectual Property Policy.  As the objective of protecting IP is for commercialization purposes, we will also cover briefly the process and some of the activities required to protect and manage the IP.  This should be interactive with numerous opportunities for questions.

About the presenterS, MICHÈLE BEAULIEU & DERRICK WONG:

Dr. Michèle Beaulieu has been working at McGill University for the past 3 years, first as Officer, Life Sciences in the Office of Technology Transfer and now as Associate Director, Commercialization in McGill’s Office of Sponsored Research.  She holds a Ph.D. in Physiology with a specialization in Endocrinology as well as a Masters of Business Administration and has post-doctoral training in Neurosciences and Biochemical Pharmacology.  Her career has covered basic medical research in Canadian and American universities followed by management, business development and executive positions in marketing in the healthcare industry in multinational and biotech companies as well as consulting in health technologies. 
 
Derrick Wong, Commercialization Officer, has been with McGill University since 2005 at the Office of Technology Transfer and now the Office of Sponsored Research and has managed a portfolio of intellectual property with a focus on software, physics and electrical engineering. Prior to joining McGill, Derrick worked with Tyco Electronics, Nortel Networks, Agere Systems (formerly Lucent Microelectronics) in a variety of engineering, marketing and project management roles. He has an undergraduate degree in Applied Mathematics and Engineering and graduate degrees in Business Administration and Financial Engineering.
