François Germain: Electronic synthesizer analysis using nonlinear system modelling

The continuing popularity of the "analog sound" in the music community has led researchers to look for modelling methods that accuratelyreproducethe behaviour of analog music devices such as loudspeakers, guitar amplifiers, and popular synthesizer modules. The source of this particular behaviour is essentially the non-linearities present in the components (electronic and/or mechanic) of these devices.

This presentation will introduce an overview of the different general approaches developed for nonlinear system modelling, as well as state-of-the-art research on "virtual analog synthesis", i.e. emulation of analog music devices, with a particular focus on electronic synthesizer effects such as filters and ring modulators.

François Germain is a Master degree candidate in the Sound Processing and Control Laboratory at McGill University since 2009. He holds a Diplôme d'ingénieur from École Polytechnique (Paris, France).
