ABSTRACT
Digital technology offers new perspectives for musicologists and researchers alike for which music sources are primary research material. These perspectives are made possible by ongoing developments in many areas, including the growth of bibliographic research projects, the progress in source transcription using optical music recognition (OMR) technology, the establishment of new music notation modeling schemes, and the development of innovative tools for processing and handling music notation data. This presentation will highlight these topics by looking at some key example projects.
ABOUT LAURENT PUGIN
In the recent years, the main research field of Laurent Pugin has been optical music recognition for early music, in connection with fields such as Renaissance music philology, music printing history, music digitization and machine learning applied to music.
Upon completion of his Ph.D. at Geneva University, he was a postdoctoral researcher and lecturer at McGill University in Montreal from 2006-2009 and a visiting scholar at Stanford University, USA. He has been co-Director of the Swiss RISM since 2009, responsible for infrastructure development and international contacts. In 2013 he was appointed Board member of the International Steering Committee of the RISM. He is also co-applicant of SIMSSA, a seven-year research project based at McGill University. He has been a member of the Board of the Music Encoding Initiative (MEI) and co-chair of its technical team since 2014.
