Student Outreach

Return to Funding overview

OVERVIEW

With aims to encourage community engagement, expand CIRMMT exposure, and diversify student involvement, this Outreach award introduces a different avenue for funding student members. With this award, student members are incentivized to develop interactive methods of presenting their CIRMMT research primarily within Quebec and Canada. Such outreach activities are meant to:
  • Instill value in the research of the Arts and Sciences
  • Attract students in pursuing Science Technology Engineering Arts & Mathematics (STEAM) degrees in CEGEP and undergraduate programs
  • Increase the appeal of STEAM programs to young music students
  • Demonstrate that the pursuit of studies combining science, technology and the arts play an important role in the advancement of knowledge

OBJECTIVES

  • To engage CIRMMT student members through a pedagogical task;
  • To foster new relationships between current CIRMMT members, CIRMMT affiliated institutions and industries, and interested educational and cultural collaborators;
  • To demonstrate the benefits and opportunities open to current CIRMMT members;
  • To raise awareness of CIRMMT activities to a broader community.

ELIGIBILITY

  • All current, graduate and postdoctoral CIRMMT student members are eligible to apply. Visiting students are eligible to apply.
  • REMINDER: To be eligible, students must be enrolled at the time of the presentation and one month following this.
  • Research done outside of CIRMMT premises, but clearly linked to CIRMMT (e.g., done at UdeM by a CIRMMT student) is eligible.
  • Students are welcome to initiate their own contact with an institution (once confirmed as appropriate by CIRMMT) or CIRMMT can suggest locations.
  • All applicants are requested to ensure their CIRMMT sponsor is aware of their application to this award and to consult with them as necessary.
  • Please contact us if you have queries.

ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS

CIRMMT values the participation of students in the life of CIRMMT. While there are those who are more officially involved, such as the student representatives and coordinators, those who contribute to the community through other forms of engagement are also valued, and these involvements will be taken into consideration. Such forms of engagement can include, but are not limited to, participation in demonstrations or the more in-depth organization of a CIRMMT workshop.

  • In order to be considered eligible for CIRMMT funding, students are expected to attend:
    • EITHER a minimum of 4 out of 6 Distinguished Lectures in the 12 months prior to the application deadline,
    • OR a minimum of 3 out of 6 Distinguished Lectures and significantly contribute to the organization of a CIRMMT workshop along with the RA co-leaders, or in a demonstration during specific special events (e.g., tours of CIRMMT/MMR) in the 12 months prior to the application deadline.
    • NOTE: In both situations above, ONE Distinguished Lecture can be replaced by attending a live@CIRMMT concert.

  • All attendance will be tracked via sign-up sheet for in-person events.
  • Event attendance requirements are instated to demonstrate the applicant’s active involvement in CIRMMT activities. If the applicant does not meet these requirements, extenuating circumstances will be reviewed, and proof must be provided.
  • Students from universities outside Montreal (U. de Sherbrooke and Université Laval) are exempt from fulfilling the in-person event requirements but are encouraged to attend when possible.

AVAILABLE FUNDING

This award would be delivered as a stipend of $350 to individuals to carry out the following:
  • Awardees would be required to give a presentation at an educational or other cultural institution, tailored to the needs of the institution, based on the awardee’s current research and involvement at CIRMMT, followed by a question period. The talk must either involve a small demo, or be something more hands on for greater interaction, and should primarily take place within Quebec and Canada.
  • The current loan policy for taking equipment off site will apply.
  • Awardees, if interested, may offer one additional presentation at a different location for an additional stipend of $150.
  • No additional costs will be reimbursed; the stipend must cover all expenses (e.g., travel, supplies etc.).
  • Awardees must complete their presentation within the fiscal year, before April 12th. After this time, funding will not be given, but another application can be made.
