Workshop on Acoustics and the Performance of Music Registration Form
Description
This workshop will consist of a morning and afternoon session.
During the morning session aspects of “Acoustics and the Performance of Music” will be explored. A series of practical demonstrations with expert musicians will allow participants to observe how performers interact with their acoustic environment. Common questions include:
- How do music performers “play the room”
- How do they adjust to dry/reverberant acoustics
- How does the room acoustics influence their performance (tempo choice, sound production, sound projection)
- Are inspiration and expressivity connected with the way performers interact with the acoustics surrounding them?
The afternoon session will focus on issues related to measuring music instrument radiation directivity. A 64-channel measurement system recently acquired by the Computational Acoustic Modeling Laboratory of CIRMMT via a grant from the Canadian Foundation for Innovation will be demonstrated and the goals for its use discussed. We plan to engage Dr. Meyer and other workshop participants in a discussion on such issues as:
- microphone calibration
- far-field vs. near-field conditions and results
- instrument positioning with respect to the microphone array (acoustical centering)
- inclusion of the performer during measurements
- stimulus signals for the measurements
- instrument-specific issues
Preliminary Schedule
- 10:00 Morning session on the sound of music instruments, performance choices of tempo and expression and the interaction with the room acoustics
- 12:00 Lunch break (lunch not provided)
- 14:00 Afternoon session on measuring music instrument directivity
