Description
- INTRO and ENIGMA (20 min.)
Discussion of the importance of respecting notational standards and when to break the rules.
- OVERVIEW OF NOTATION TYPES (30 min.)
Presentation of the essentials, particularities, pros and cons of the various categories of notation types, from traditional and proportional notation to text-based and graphic scores.
- GRAPHIC DESIGN AND TYPOGRAPHY APPLIED TO MUSIC NOTATION (20-30 min.)
Even with only a basic understanding of fundamental graphic design and typography principles, it is possible to greatly enhance the clarity and legibility (and sexiness!) of the score.
- PIMP THIS SCORE (30 min.)
Group analysis and discussion of two of the following (likely 1 and 2):
1) The problematics of representing musical time in horizontal space, using a well known published work as an example.
2) Pros and cons of a composer's original hand-written score vs. its digital version.
3) An excellent quality published score of a key work is compared to my new digital version.
- CLOSING / FEEDBACK (10 min.)
A quick wrap-up to help inform me about the impressions made on the participants by my presentation so that I may improve the presentation format or content for future sessions.
- NOTATIONAL EXTREMES (10 min.) (time permitting)
We take a look at a rather whimsical graphic score and consider the difficulties which arise from attempts to impose fixed æsthetic and design criteria to such approaches to notation.
