A propos de MARIO BERTONCINI
Mario Bertoncini est – dans n’importe quel ordre – un compositeur, un inventeur, un poète, un philosophe, un pianiste, un musicien et un constructeur de sons.
Il a expérimenté et testé continument les abords du son, appréhendé comme une entité instable et variable (passim G. Borio) depuis 1962, le moment où il commence à « préparer » des instruments acoustiques par le moyen de techniques non orthodoxes, et souvent à employer de l’électronique en direct (il a inventé un système bien connu qui modifie les instruments à cordes, surtout le violoncelle et la contrebasse, afin de réaliser ses exigences compositionnelles).
De 1965 à 1972, il est membre du Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza, et de 1969 à 1972, il agit à titre de directeur artistique. Durant la deuxième moitié des années soixante, il s’approche du théâtre musical à travers une série d’œuvres (notons Spazio-Tempo, produit lors du Biennale de Venise en 1970) où il propose un rapport fonctionnel entre tous les éléments impliqués dans l’action scénique. Il dénomme ce projet, Le Théâtre de la Réalité. De 1973 à 1975, il réside à Berlin comme « artiste en résidence » invité par le DAAD (Berliner Künstlerprogramm).
Pendant la même période, il commence à dessiner et à construire des agrégats sonores, véritables sculptures sonores fondées sur le principe éolien, une recherche qui vise à émanciper le concept de forme sonore de son développement temporel.
À l’Université McGill entre 1974 et 1976, il donne un cours expérimental de composition intitulé Musical Design. Comme professeur à l’Universität der Künste Berlin (UdK) de 1977 à 1998, il consacre son temps aux séminaires et aux concerts/conférences dans plusieurs pays notamment les États-Unis, le Canada, la Corée et Israël.
Parmi ses projets à signaler : Vele (voiles), harpes éoliennes massives mesurant plus de 7 mètres de haut ; Venti (vents, vingt), pour 20 générateurs sonores éoliens et 40 interprètes ; Chanson pour instruments à vent, un « assemblage » de harpes éoliennes, et gongs, pour un interprète.
En parallèle avec ses activités de compositeur, interprète et constructeur d’instruments, Bertoncini s’adonne à une pratique littéraire aux expressions diversifiées : à la fin de ses études formelles, il collabore avec l’Enciclopedia dello Spettacolo Sansoni en tant que rédacteur se spécialisant dans le répertoire lyrique du 18e siècle ; et plus tard, il travaille pour la radiotélévision italienne (RAI) où il traduit vers un italien rythmé un grand nombre de livrets anglais, français, et allemand (dont Der Lindberghflug, de Brecht et Weill), et il a fait la recension de plus de quatre-vingts opéras lyriques venant d’époques historiques diverses.
À partir de 1976, il dédie une portion de son temps à la rédaction de dialogues, principalement sur la musique, inspirés de la forme platonicienne.
About MARIO BERTONCINI
Mario Bertoncini is – in no specific order – a composer, an inventor, a poet, a philosopher, a pianist, a musician and a builder of sounds.
He has been continuously experimenting and testing the edges of sound, intended as a variable and unstable entity (passim G. Borio) since 1962, when he began “preparing” acoustic instruments by employing unorthodox techniques, and often also making use of live electronics (he invented a well-known system to modify string instruments, especially the cello and double bass, in order to achieve his compositional needs).
From 1965 to 1972, he was part of the Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza, and from 1969 to 1972, he was also its artistic director. Also in the second half of the sixties, he approached music theatre through a series of works (among them Spazio-Tempo, staged at the Venice Biennale in 1970) in which he proposed a functional relationship between all the elements involved in the scenic action. He named this project, The Theatre of Reality. From 1973 to 1975, he lived in Berlin as “artist in residence” of the DAAD (Berliner Künstlerprogramm).
In the same period, he began to design and build sound aggregates, true sound sculptures based upon the principle of aeolian sound, which aimed to liberate the concept of sound from any temporal development.
At McGill University, between 1974 and 1976, he gave an experimental composition course entitled Musical Design. And from 1977 to 1998, as professor at the Universität der Künste Berlin (UdK), he held seminars and gave lecture/concerts in many countries including the U.S., Canada, Europe, Korea and Israel.
Amongst his notable projects: Vele (sails), massive aeolian harps measuring more than 7 metres high; Venti (winds, twenty), for 20 aeolian sound generators and 40 performers; Chanson pour instruments à vent, an “assemblage” for aeolian harps, and gongs, for one performer.
In parallel with his activities as a composer, performer, and instrument builder, Bertoncini cultivates a literary practice, in different forms: at the end of his formal studies, he collaborated with the Enciclopedia dello Spettacolo Sansoni as an editor specializing in 18th century musical theatre; and later on, he worked for RAI, the Italian radio and television network, translating a variety of English, French and German libretti into rhythmic Italian (among these, the Flight of Lindbergh by Brecht and Weill), and he wrote more than eighty reviews of operas from diverse historical periods.
Starting in 1976, he has dedicated a part of his time to the writing about music and other matters in the form of dialogues inspired by the Platonic model.
