Abstract

During this seminar, Dominic Thibault will consider what the cybernetics metaphor can mean when applied to organizing sound and making music.

He will begin the discussion by looking at the interaction between the human being/musician and the machine, thus highlighting certain elements of his practice in instrument design and construction. He will then discuss the important role cybernetics has in understanding how communication shapes the development of collaborative artistic projects.

In this context, Thibault regards composition as the design of musical systems which are then explored through improvisation. This exploration through the compositional process then becomes a question about time; how it is organized and, more importantly, how it is perceived on an individual level.
