Voices from the field: Navigating equity and discrimination in professional audio

Voices from the field: Navigating equity and discrimination in professional audio

A workshop presented by Research axis 4 (Expanded musical practice)

Description

Recent conversations with our Sound Recording students, sparked by a visit from CIRMMT Distinguished lecturer Dr. Jude Brereton, highlighted something important: while our academic community is widely experienced as equitable, inclusive, and respectful, students are deeply aware that this “safe space” does not always reflect the realities of the professional audio world. Many still encounter sexism and other forms of discrimination across multiple sectors of the industry.

To engage this issue directly, we invite you to a special panel discussion featuring professionals who have transitioned from academia into the audio industry and who bring perspectives informed by their experiences as members of visible minorities. Our panelists will discuss the challenges they have faced, how discrimination can manifest in professional contexts, and the strategies they have developed to navigate, resist, and succeed within the field. Join us for an open, honest, and constructive conversation about building a more equitable future in professional audio.
