FRQNT-Mitacs Globalink Research Award

Please note that CIRMMT is only able to submit a total of four candidates per year for a maximum total request of $24,000.

ELIGIBILITY & RULES

  • The scholarship is intended for graduating undergraduates, Master's or Doctoral students enrolled full-time in a Quebec university or in a non-Canadian university who meet the requirements of their program of study. Postdoctoral fellows are also eligible.
    • N.B.: Students must be enrolled for the full period of the award funding/travel period. Please take this into consideration if you believe travel might have to be deferred.
  • The proposed research outlined in the application as part of the internship must be related to CIRMMT, its mission and its research axes.
  • Citizenship/permit rules are taken into consideration for this funding:
    • For full-time students enrolled in a Québec university & postdoctoral fellows in Québec: The applicant must be a Canadian citizen, or a permanent resident of Canada, or be a Québec resident as defined by the RAMQ.
    • For students enrolled in a university outside of Canada and in a Mitacs partner country: The applicant must hold the necessary study permits or visas for the duration of their internship in Québec.
  • Location of the internship:
    • For students and postdoctoral fellows enrolled at a Québec university: The internship must take place outside Canada and at a Mitacs partner university. Supervisors must be from the same home university as the student/postdoctoral fellow, and must be a CIRMMT Regular member.
    • For students from outside of Canada: The internship must occur in Quebec. The host researcher must be a CIRMMT Regular member.
  • Duration of the internship: The internship must be of a minimum duration of 12 weeks and a maximum of 24 weeks.
  • Award amount: The maximum amount of each FRQNT-Mitacs Globalink Research Award is $6,000 CAD. The financial assistance granted is intended to support the student during his or her internship. Only expenses eligible by Mitacs under this scholarship will be accepted.
  • Start date of the internship: The internship must start no later than one year after receipt of the letter of confirmation of the scholarship.
  • Restrictions:
    • Students who are jointly supervised by a researcher in a foreign university (co-degree) are not eligible to apply for an international internship scholarship to visit one of their home universities.
    • Postdoctoral fellows holding a FRQNT postdoctoral fellowship who already have a place of internship outside Québec, and postdoctoral fellows receiving an excellence award for foreign students are not eligible.
    • This award must be used for travel purposes and not for online distance research. If travel needs to be postponed, successful applicants must inform CIRMMT and Mitacs.
    • All applications must be submitted to Mitacs a minimum of 16 weeks before travel is expected.
  • PLEASE NOTE that to be considered eligible for CIRMMT funding during the COVID-19 period, students are expected to attend:
    • EITHER 4 attendances to CIRMMT in-person and online activities including Distinguished Lectures, Interact@CIRMMT, live@CIRMMT, or other online seminars/workshops in the 12 months prior to the application;
    • OR 3 attendances and significantly contribute to the organization of a CIRMMT event along with the RA co-leaders in the 12 months prior to the application.
    • Attendance will be tracked via sign-up sheets for in-person events, and the chat of the online meeting platform used (e.g. Webex, Zoom, MS Teams etc.).
    • All students must fulfil the online event attendance requirements. However, students from universities outside Montreal (U. de Sherbrooke and Université Laval) are exempt from fulfilling the in-person event requirements.
    • Extenuating circumstances will be reviewed - proof must be provided.

APPLICATION PROCESS - INTERNAL STAGE

  • INTERNAL MANDATORY DEADLINE: December 1st, 4pm. If the deadline falls on a weekend, applications will be accepted through to the following Monday at 4pm.
  • One complete electronic copy, in a single PDF document, of the form and all additional documents must be submitted to the Centre’s Office Administrator (reception@cirmmt.mcgill.ca) by the deadline.
  • **Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.

REVIEW PROCESS & MITACS APPLICATION PROCESS

  • Internal applications will be reviewed by a committee of 3-4 CIRMMT members, including the Director, on the FRQNT-Mitacs stipulated criteria (Section 5 of the FRQNT webpage).
  • Those who are selected must complete the application pack supplied by Mitacs, which will be submitted by CIRMMT through the Mitacs' Business Development Specialist by the FRQNT deadline of February 1st.
  • All internship applications must be submitted by CIRMMT and approved by Mitacs PRIOR to the departure of the student or postdoctoral fellow.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF RESULTS

  • Mitacs will announce the results 8-12 weeks after the applications are received by them.
  • Mitacs makes the final decision on the scholarships to be awarded under this scholarship program.
  • Internships are awarded at any time up to a maximum of four applications per strategic cluster or network up to the application deadline (February 1st). CIRMMT will then announce the results, mentioning that FRQNT and Mitacs are the organizations awarding the scholarships to the candidates.
  • Mitacs, in collaboration with FRQNT, reserves the right to refuse an application that does not meet the eligibility requirements.

POST-INTERNSHIP SURVEY - MANDATORY

  • An end of internship survey will be sent by Mitacs to the students and postdoctoral fellows who completed the internship.
  • This survey must be sent by email to the person responsible for business development at Mitacs no later than one month after the end of the internship, as well as to CIRMMT.
  • If a student fails to submit the internship survey according to the rules, CIRMMT cannot file new applications to the program as long as the situation is not rectified.
