Lorenzo Paniconi, an Italian-Canadian composer, flautist, and researcher, was born in Cagliari, Italy, in 1996. He studied the flute with Salvatore Saddi and Riccardo Ghiani before going on to study at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional (CRR) in Lyon, France, under Frédéric Berteletti. It was here that he first approached composition under the guidance of Stéphane Borrel. He then continued his performance studies at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussels, graduating with a Master of Arts in Music with great distinction in Carlos Bruneel’s class in 2021, specialising in contemporary and experimental music performance. In 2019, he enrolled at the same institution for a Bachelor of Arts in Composition under Peter Swinnen, graduating in 2022. During this period, he received an Erasmus scholarship, enabling him to complete his degree at the Haute École des Arts du Rhin in Strasbourg, France. There, he studied with Daniel D'Adamo and Tom Mays. Lorenzo continued his studies in composition in Strasbourg, where he obtained in 2024 a joint Master's degree from the Haute École des Arts du Rhin and the University of Strasbourg, completing a research-creation project focusing on the composition and performance of music with live electronics. Since September 2024, he has been a doctoral student in composition at McGill University. His current research focuses on the role of active aural imagination in the creative processes of composition.
His music has been performed by ensembles such as Collective Lovemusic, Ensemble Intercolor, Ensemble Accroche-Note, Ensemble L'Imaginaire (France), Tempus Connex (Germany) and Ensemble Éclat (Canada). As a performer, he regularly takes part in performances of new music, as well as the standard repertoire, in Canada and abroad.
