Multimedia Room (MMR) officially reopened on 19 October 2023

October 24, 2023

After many years of renovation, CIRMMT announced the official reopening of the MMR (Multimedia Room) on Thursday, October 19, 2023.

The Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Music Media and Technology (CIRMMT) announced the official reopening of the MMR (Multimedia Room) on Thursday, October 19 2023, at 3 pm and at 7 pm.

This event celebrated the interdisciplinary research and success of the CFI-8 Live Expression "in situ": Musical and Audiovisual Performance and Reception project, which enabled substantial transformations to be made to the existing infrastructure and research equipment. After many years of renovation, the MMR, located on the premises of McGill University's Schulich School of Music, is accessible once again.

The MMR, situated in the Elizabeth Wirth Music Building (527 Sherbrooke West, Montreal), is a unique, four-story tall facility designed for the scientific study of live performance, movement of sound in space, and distributed performance. This unparalleled space can transform from a research lab into a critical listening room, a concert hall, or even a meta-instrument, and may also be used as a world-class recording studio.

The reopening event featured a series of short demonstrations that showcased the room’s exclusive physical and electronic acoustical enhancements. CIRMMT researchers and students presented some of their cutting-edge research shaping the sound of the future, as well as the future of sound.

Those present included Louise Poissant, Scientific Director of the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Société et culture, Abida Oyued, Director of programs and partnerships of the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Nature et technologies and Christina Vigna, Directrice générale des affaires universitaires, recherche et innovation Enseignement supérieur of the Ministère de l’Enseignement supérieur, as well as representatives of CIRMMT’s partner institutions (McGill, Université de Montréal, Université de Sherbrooke and ÉTS). Also present were representatives of the architects, acousticians, structural engineers and contractors, as well as the McGill Project Management team. Other guests included representatives from Société des arts technologiques, Société de musique contemporaine du Québec, Le Vivier, Analekta, Atma, Conseil des arts de Montréal, Moment Factory, M pour Montreal et Mundial, Radio Canada Ici Musique, Pan M and Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal.
