Paul Schulz-Courtemanche is a French-Canadian flautist currently established in Montréal, Québec. He is pursuing his doctoral studies at McGill University’s Schulich School of Music in the Applied Performance Science program, where he focuses his research on developing adaptive concert models for individuals with ASD. He holds an MMus in Literature and Performance from Western University’s (UWO) Don Wright Faculty of Music, where he studied under Stephen Tam. During his master's degree, he performed in masterclasses for renowned flautists such as Susan Hoeppner and Kelly Zimba Lukić, as well as professors Ingrid Crozman and Sharron Kahan. While at UWO, he was awarded the Bruce and Helen Mills Instrument Award and premiered several student compositions through his involvement in the Contemporary Music Studio and Viet Cuong’s Re(new)al with TorQ. His implication with the Early Music Studio offered Paul the opportunity to perform in a masterclass and concert with members of Tafelmusik.

He previously studied with Myriam Genest-Denis at Cégep de Sherbrooke and at Bishop’s University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts with double Honours in Music Performance and Musicology, and a minor in Arts Administration, in June 2022. During his time at BU, he was the recipient of numerous awards, including the Hodder Award in Music, the Howard Brown Prize in Music, the E.W. John Turcke Scholarship, and the University Prize in Music.

He has also performed in masterclasses with Sally Minter, Dr. Nathalie De Grâce, and Jocelyne Roy and had the privilege of studying piccolo with Sally Minter, and flute with Klára Sándor, Louise Labbé, Jeff Stonehouse, and “Prisoner of Azkaban Flute Soloist Extraordinaire” Karen Jones. He has also studied chamber music with Dr. Pauline Farrugia, Dr. Ross Osmun, Dr. Paul Frehner, Patricia Green, and Dr. De Grâce.

Paul has performed with the Ingersoll Choral Society, the Western University Symphony Orchestra, the Western University Opera Orchestra, and the Western University Wind Ensemble. He has regularly occupied the 3rd flute position in the Orchestre du Septième Art in Sherbrooke.

As an administrator, Paul was the 65th National Final Coordinator for the Canadian Music Competition and worked from 2021 to 2025 as festival coordinator for the Festival-concours de musique de Sherbrooke and held the position of interim Centennial Theatre Coordinator in Sherbrooke from April 2024 to May 2025. Paul has also occupied the positions of Music Department Curator and Coordinator of the Musique Chez Nous Concert Series during his undergraduate degree.

His passion for New Music began during his undergraduate studies at Bishop’s University with the Canadian premiere of Kevin Leomo’s Nocturne (2017), for alto flute. Since then, he has continued to incorporate New Music into his recitals. He followed a two-week session at Domaine Forget for New Music in June 2023, where he worked closely with members of the Paramirabo Ensemble, notably the flutist Jeff Stonehouse. He has premiered works by Canadian and British composers. Recently, he has performed Composition pour sextuor by Jules Bastin-Fontaine during the 9th edition of the Vivier Interuniversitaire: Annual Concert.

As a researcher, Paul has recently been awarded a doctoral bursary from the Fonds de recherche du Québec, which he had to decline since he was also awarded an SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship to focus on his research. In his spare time, Paul enjoys cooking and baking in his charming Outremont kitchen, running, biking, meeting new people, being in nature, and spending time with his family and close friends.
