Workshop: “Performance Culture and Mental Health: How Can We Draw Inspiration from ‘Slow Scholarship’ to Survive and Thrive in Graduate School?”

Ten strategic clusters from the Society and Culture sector of the Fonds de recherche du Québec (FRQ) are organizing the workshop “Performance Culture and Mental Health: How Can We Draw Inspiration from ‘Slow Scholarship’ to Survive and Thrive in Graduate School? ,” facilitated by Justine-Anne Rowell (Executive Director of Thèsez-vous?), in collaboration with Thèsez-vous. The event will take place on October 1, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., online (Zoom).

Registration is required (by September 29, 2026, at the latest). Spaces are limited and reserved for student members of participating organizations.

In a context where a performance-driven culture is synonymous with the acceleration and fragmentation of academic work, the erosion of collegiality, and the exacerbation of inequalities and mental health challenges, this workshop offers:

  • the opportunity to learn more about the factors that may exacerbate mental health challenges in graduate school;
  • the chance to reflect, drawing inspiration from the principles of “slow scholarship,” on strategies for taking care of one’s own health (and that of others), and for rediscovering meaning and joy in intellectual work and writing.

Writing Cohorts - FRQ-SC Strategic Clusters x Thèsez-vous?

Ten strategic clusters in the Society and Culture sector of the Fonds de recherche du Québec (FRQ) are organizing four-day structured writing cohorts for their student members in collaboration with Thèsez-vous. These cohorts will take place in November 2026 in Montreal (UQAM), Quebec City (Université Laval), and online (Zoom).

A writing cohort helps students structure their writing process and transforms a solitary activity into a collective experience. This weekly activity will allow students to discuss the writing challenges they face, break out of isolation, and stay motivated throughout the long journey of writing a master’s thesis or doctoral dissertation.

Registration is required (by October 19, 2026, at the latest):

Since space is limited, participants commit to attending all 4 days of the writing cohort.
